The Denmark Tavern - A Hidden Gem, Yet to be Explored

Just because through our posts we always want to take you through those places which we assume that you haven’t visited or if you have visited ever those places then you and Us can relive the moment together. Today I will talk about a gem that I found out one day suddenly with the help of internet. The Denmark Tavern, by the name you have already guessed that the place would be anyway related to Denmark.  Yes, you guessed it right but its rightly located not anywhere but in the outskirts of Kolkata, Serampore. Some of you would be hearing the name for the first time 😃. If you have read history well in your school days (which I haven’t) you would know that from the year 1755 the urbanization of Serampore started with the arrival of Danes. And they had built the Danish Colonial Empire. They used to buy goods from Sheoraphuli hat which they used to export in the European Countries through the way of River Ganga and for this purpose they had taken lands which was situated closely to the bank of the river.

I have given so much information not to bore you but to make you feel connected to the entire topic. In the year 1786 , One Danish Merchant  bought a ‘kuthi’ which was situated closely to the bank of the river Ganga , which now will welcome you in the name of The Denmark Tavern. This house is very nicely preserved and reconstructed, well maintained by the Government and Now its offering the first Danish café cum restaurant in town.

How to reach By reading the history I am sure now you are more curious to know how to reach that amazing place. Two ways are there, 1. You can avail train from Howrah station and get down at Serampore, from there you will have to take toto or Rickshaw. But I would suggest better to take the second option, 2. You can take a boat ride from Dhobi Ghat which is in Barrackpore. From Barrackpore station you will be able to get an auto which will take you to Dhobi Ghat and let me tell you this ghat offers the best picturesque view ever. If you don’t believe you can check the picture in the above. And when you are approaching to the other side of the ghat you can see your Destination, welcoming you. I would have taken the picture but by the time I realized it, it was missed 😏.

The moment you will reach the place first the colour, the structure of the house would attract you. That old big windows green in colour would definitely give you the pleasure of visiting an age old heritage house. Stand there and click few photos, after that you can enter. By entering you will be awestrucked to notice the high ceiling and old traditional chandelier hanging above. The soothing light along with the music will be the cherry on top of the cake. They generally allow you to take a tour of the whole house by yourself and the beautiful nicely decorated house will not disappoint you. And let me remind you the place is not photography prohibited.😍

What To Eat   After taking a tour you can order some tasty food in their restaurant which is presently run by THE PARK. Just because this place has a connection with Danish food so we thought of ordering the same. We ordered Danish Roast Chicken, Danish Chicken Sausage and Chicken Sandwich. Those Danish food items seemed heavenly in taste. Chicken Sandwich tasted quite usual like any other good restaurant offers. We were three in number and these three food items were enough to fill our stomach. Besides that their’s White Sauce Pasta along with Café latte are quite popular. For two persons, 600 bucks will be enough to have a good meal. One major drawback of this beautiful joint can be that you will have to wait for a longer time to acquire a table. Hopefully they will rectify that by the passing time.

Oops, the main thing The view, I have forgotten to tell you. In front of this Denmark Tavern you can see the beautiful Ganga river which let you experience the calm atmosphere along with soothing your mind with the view. The cool breeze will definitely make your visit memorable.
They also have a small outlet of Flurys, beside the restaurant. Don’t forget to buy some yummy pastries before leaving the place. 💓
